1810 $5 Half Eagle Pics
Here's a nice coin I picked up the other day. Yes I know, any of you with a red book will tell me that I could have gotten much more gold for the buck by going with bullion, but I am a collector at heart, and I suspect, always will be. Enjoy the pics!

Very nice and yes I am slightly jealous. I always find the early US Mint coins (late 1790's early 1800's for the non-collectors) to be interesting. I cant help but wonder about the history of that coin over the past 198 years.

Let me get this straight. That coin only has a USD face value. No purity or weight stamped? I'm obviously not ready to move outside the bullion arena.

Re: 1810 $5 Half Eagle Pics
Those coins were minted when a US dollar had a grain amount tied to the coins...you instantly knew the weight but not the purity based on the face value.

I have more information and pictures here. Forgive the writing style, I was drunk at the time.

Look at that nasty nick on the backside edge of that coin, " bottom picture ". Don't you hate it when they cut a chunck out of such coins to verify that its gold? |

For example my favorite, the 1804 plain 4 Proof Eagle example, only 4 were minted with one resting comfortably in the ANA museum. In 1980 this coin was valued at $50,000 and in 2005 was sold by Albanese Rare Coins (http://www.coinace.com ) to a private collector for $2 + million dollars. |
